A prime goal of the Russian Space Program was to provide space travelers with a portable medical device that would become their "universal medical assistant" in space. So from the beginning, the SCENAR was designed to replace an entire medical hospital, with all its staff, diagnostic and treatment facilities, even the pharmacy. A universal, non-invasive, portable regulator of body functions (among other things) was envisaged.

This unique medical project was undertaken by the Taganrog (a small southern Russian town) Soviet Special Design Bureau, which was set up specifically for this purpose. For a long time SCENAR remained top secret Soviet Space Medicine.

Over the last several decades science has discovered that cells communicate with each other via various forces that they broadcast and pick up - like miniature radio stations. A SCENAR picks up this "biological information" from the body and, using an "adaptive biofeedback loop", establishes an "interactive dialog" with the body. In this sense the instrument "talks" to the body in the language of the body. This dialog forms a treatment system comprised of both the body and the device. By helping to regulate out of balance body systems, SCENAR tends to bring to a normal condition anything and everything that the body can itself restore with its own regulatory and repair systems. SCENAR produces no negative impact and the effects of its action remain for quite a long time after each treatment.

Recovery is provided by restoration and harmonization of the inherent body reserves and systems. There are no side effects because SCENAR brings no negative changes with it.

(Symptom suppression via certain drugs on the other hand, may lead to the defensive and adaptive mechanisms of the body being impaired and may result in even more severe conditions or the unnatural lingering of diseases.)

SCENAR tends to alter the course of pathological processes and assists the body to make dynamic changes via very small electrical impulses coded in the "language of the body". SCENAR helps the body to make positive changes - through to the natural resolution of the disease process.

SCENAR therapy is delivered to the body in a natural, spike-shaped, nerve impulse form. There are several short cycles of therapy which all operate at the same, variable frequency. The first cycle is made strong enough to positively influence the many types of nerve tissue.

The body controls SCENAR therapy via various, complex changes in skin impedance, the “interactive dialog". In this manner, the body regulates the structure of each new therapy impulse so that every impulse will be unique to the particular person at the particular moment in time.

Whilst principally promoted for pain management, SCENAR is also highly effective in promoting healing of damaged tissues such as overstretched muscles, sprains, strains and tears. It also acts beneficially on the endocrine system, promoting the balancing of hormones, particularly female reproductive hormones. In this regard it is of use against painful periods, dysmenorrhoea or endometriosis. The ability to change settings, such as frequency, allow the system to be used for very specific purposes such as balancing the autonomic nervous system. When there has been over-stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system (stress conditions, raised blood pressure, chronic fatigue, depressed immune system etc) a protocol of specific frequencies may be used to re-harmonise the sympathetic and  parasympathetic nervous systems.
